B3313 Wiki

Restored Castle Grounds is an area in B3313.

Description[]

The exterior of this area resembles Super Mario 64's Castle Grounds, albeit with a darker atmosphere. Many elements are missing, including the Peach stained window, all the water, and usual vanilla warps except for the front doors to the inside of the castle. The basement doorway particularly seems to be covered. There are two new warps: a pipe at the spawn point which only warps to itself, and a large hole in the back tower on the right side of the castle. The cannon is present, along with the small sandy section of the original game.

There seems to be a Lakitu Bro waiting for the player on the bridge to the castle, and carrying his camera but without his cloud. However, when approached, he attacks, homing the player.

The castle interior, located in the same area, resembles Super Mario 64's First Floor, again with missing elements. The stairs, differently from one of the so-called "vanilla" lobbies, are present. There are no rooms behind any of the doors, the star door is missing, replaced mysteriously with an immobile metal block, and the entire doorway to the Jolly Roger Bay painting room is absent. Peach's Ghost stands in the center of the lobby, awaiting the player.

v0.9/UA ("unused")[]

True to its name, unused is a seemingly unused location, accessible only by warping to it, using external programs like Star Display. It appears to be an extremely buggy version of both the vanilla game's castle grounds and lobby connected together, with all objects like trees, doors, cannons, and water missing. The camera is very finicky, especially inside the castle, and there is no way to exit the area once entered besides warping out. There is no music or ambience playing.

Interestingly, unused is not exactly a 1:1 recreation of the vanilla game, implying that this isn't just some leftover version of the vanilla castle. There are strange, black spots littered all over the castle grounds section, presumably a leftover from the tree objects as their locations line up. There is also a large hole on the right side of the castle, possibly added to match the strange hole in the file select screen illustration of the castle in Super Mario 64 DS, which had been previously connected to several "Playable Waluigi" hoaxes and rumors. The Jolly Roger Bay painting room is also entirely missing, with the location where the door would normally be completely replaced with solid wall. The Peach's Secret Slide room also has a window with an abnormally long path behind it, although due to solid collision it cannot be entered.

Unabandoned A2AE ("unused")[]

The area is almost identical to v0.9 with some differences such as absence of black spots where the trees supposed to be and the area being brighter than usual.

Origins[]

This area is practically derived from the original Super Mario 64's Castle Grounds and the 1st Floor (the main lobby found in the game), although the hole in the tower is a reference to the black box found on the Super Mario 64 DS file select screen. The warp pipe in v1.0 is a reference to Super Mario 64's warp pipe that appears at the beginning of the game.

The music track playing here is "Dire, Dire Victory" made by Chris. It uses the credits theme of Super Mario 64 as a leitmotif.

v1.0[]

Unabandoned A2AE ("unused")[]

v0.9 ("unused")[]

Version history[]

  • Unabandoned A2 (Anniversary Edition)
    • Removed black spots.
    • The area is brighter than usual.
  • v1.0
    • Added Restored Castle Grounds.
  • v0.9
    • Added an unfinished, inaccessible version of Restored Castle Grounds with the name "unused."

Trivia[]

  • There were two planned endings to be included in the full official release of B3313, one of which was scrapped and the other left incomplete when the project was temporarily halted with v0.9.
    • The "bad" ending would have been almost identical to the game's ending in v0.7: the player is immediately dropped back into the Plexal Lobby with no closure or finality.
    • In the other ending, instead of being booted back to the Plexal Lobby, the player would instead be thrown out of a hole in the side of what appears to be the Super Mario 64's Castle Grounds (this area was later confirmed to be the level "unused". In v1.0, the area was completed and used as Restored Castle Grounds). The script would have gone approximately like so[1]:
      • After Mario/Luigi follows the "normal" route after defeating Bowser, he dies in the credits, then respawns in a negative world.
      • The last area (created by iProgramInCpp) has a hole in the ground. Entering it warps Mario/Luigi back to this area.
      • Mario/Luigi enters the castle, where they see Peach and the Toads.
      • Peach greets Mario/Luigi and invites him to another room of the castle. However, after entering the room, he falls through Bowser's trapdoor.
      • He's now trapped in a black box. Peach removes all the stars the brothers collected, then Mario/Luigi vanishes.
      • Temp Peach Dialogue: "Well, looks like he was a little weak for this job, let's see if we can find someone worthy".
      • The camera now cuts to the center of Vanilla Lobby.
      • A new Mario spawns. He has no textures, but those are slowly placed on.
      • Peach greets the new vessel as the new player, makes him sleep, and sends him through a warp pipe.
      • The vanilla cutscene plays, and Mario jumps out of the pipe.
      • The player sees Peach for the final time, before she starts transforming into different objects from the game, then disappears.
      • From there, Mario is sent to Monochrome Castle Grounds where he could then reach Star Road for optional postgame content.
      • This script was implemented in Unabandoned, with the room that has Peach and the cake being incorporated as Ending Room. However, the new vessel idea was scrapped.
      • The black box idea was implemented in the official v1.0, where it is used in Inside the Walls.
  • Dying in this area drops the player out of Bob-omb Battlefield (beta) painting in Vanilla Lobby.
  • This area replaced the Alternate Castle Grounds in v1.0, as they share the same area id and the Alternate Grounds were removed in this version of B3313.
