B3313 Wiki

Mario is one of the two playable characters in B3313.

Description[]

Mario is the elder of the two plumber brothers and the primary playable character. Mario is always the active player when the game is started. The player can switch to Luigi by pressing the L Button while in the Castle Grounds. Character switching is disabled in the Nighttime Castle Grounds. Rarely, the player's character may randomly switch from Mario to Luigi while entering a door.

B3313 uses Mario's model from the 1995 SM64 Prototype, nicknamed "Mario_old" in the iQue source code. It has the following visual differences from the model used in the vanilla game:

  • Lower poly head model. The hair on the back of Mario's head is sharper, the back of his cap isn't rounded, his nose isn't rounded on the sides, and his cheeks are flat.
  • Lighter sideburns.
  • Darker beta shading, most noticeable on his skin color.

Moveset[]

Due to Mario's stouter build, he has a different hitbox from Luigi. However, his moveset is the same.

At the start of a new game in B3313, the brothers' moveset is similar to that of the Shoshinkai demo, but with a different jump height and inability to crawl. This limiting moveset is improved as the player collects red stars, which unlock additional moves:

  • After 1 red star is collected, Mario/Luigi will gain the ability to long jump as well as kick flip (a move which replaces the vanilla game's slide kick maneuver). Additionally, Mario's/Luigi's side flip will be restored to its original height.
  • After 2 red stars are collected, Mario/Luigi will also gain the ability to backflip, sweep kick/breakdance, and crawl.

Role in B3313[]

For the most part, Mario and Luigi are interchangeable throughout the hack, serving the same role. However, a few elements place Mario as the primary, or at least default, playable character:

  • When a new game or an existing save file is loaded, the player always starts on the Castle Grounds as Mario, even if they were playing as Luigi at the time of their last save.
  • Peach's ghost always calls for Mario, never Luigi.
  • While Mario is shown drowned in Twisted Castle Grounds, there is no message or game crash associated with his body. In contrast, Luigi is shown dead, or at least imprisoned and tortured, in three separate instances: Fountain of Truth, Motos Factory, and the post-game area Inside the Walls. In all three areas, getting too close to Luigi will crash the game, and in two out of three, the message "GET ME OUT" flashes on the screen.

Trivia[]
