B3313 Wiki

Desert Maze is an area in B3313.

Description[]

The player spawns in an area branching off into two paths. However, the left one is shortly closed off by a wall, while the right one leads to a large open area with several trees, hills, and a handful of enemies such as Koopas, Fly Guys, Pokeys, the Angry Sun, and Klepto. The smallest hill has a flagpole on top of it.

If Mario/Luigi lost his hat from exiting Jolly Roger Lagoon in v0.7, he could get it back from Klepto as long as he stayed in the area. Exiting the area would cause Mario/Luigi to lose his hat again.

Origins[]

The spawn area's layout is taken directly from the vanilla version of Hazy Maze Cave. The rest of the area is an original creation. The hack's creator, ChrisRLillo, later recalled an old dream of his which resembled the area. Textures are taken from both the vanilla game and the beta version. The appearance of the trees comes from unused sprites found in the vanilla game's source code.

The music playing is "Desert [Super Mario World]" from the Super Mario Maker 2 OST but with SM64 instruments. In v0.9 onward, a rendition of the Cave theme from the Peach's Castle tech demo plays instead.

Stars[]

This area has 2 stars to collect:

  • There's a star at the top of the flagpole on the smallest hill.
  • Collecting all 8 red coins rewards the player with a star.

Additionally, in v0.7 the 100 coin star for Course 8 can be collected here.

Trivia[]

  • In v0.2, the area's textures were significantly darker, including the skybox, and the layout was slightly different.
  • (v0.9) Getting Mario's cap stolen by the Klepto in Desert Maze is one of the triggers that presses the Yellow Switch automatically. Conversely, pressing the Yellow Switch will have Klepto steal Mario's cap automatically.
