B3313 Wiki

Cryptic Hideout is an area in B3313.

Description[]

The area is a series of rooms. The main room has walls that resemble the night sky, with a stairway leading up to the cryptic symbol often recurring in the hack. Facing this symbol, going through the left door leads to a smaller room with a Bob-omb Buddy, while going through the right door leads to a hallway, and then a room where a faceless Mario resides. Going through the back door leads to a ramp and a room with another double door and a second Bob-omb Buddy. All rooms except the main one have light blue brick walls, while all of them have a checkered floor and a ceiling similar to the main room's walls.

Like in many other areas, a crimson fog can be seen throughout all of the rooms, which disappears as the player gets close to it. This fog has been removed in v1.0.

Origins[]

This area may have been inspired from one of Gab64's videos with different warp, different size, layout change, different music, addition of red fogs, and different texture. The ceiling texture can be seen in the Shoshinkai beta of Super Mario 64. The carpet texture in the staircase room is from the vanilla game, while the main room's wall texture seems to be a darker version of a wall texture used in the same game. The purple texture used for some stair parts in the main room might be inspired by a video showcasing the internal castle plexus in what's likely a private ROM hack.

The music that plays here is "Wrinkly 64" from Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble in a minor key. In versions prior to v0.9, and Unabandoned, the "Castle & Fortress" theme from Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island was used here. In v0.4, the music playing was "Inside Castle Walls" from "Super Mario 64".

  • Vanilla Lobby (v0.7): Doing MIPS Clip on Vanilla Basement will send you to the reverse of the double-door, where is a 1up. Touching it will send the player at the v0.4 version of the area.

Two-way[]

  • Plexal Upstairs: Go through the double door in the room past the ramp.
  • Funhouse: Go through the double door in the room to the left when facing the "clock" in the main room.

Changelog[]

  • v1.0
    • Changed sound effect when talking to Bob-omb Buddy in area to an ominous warning sound instead of usual text sound.
  • v0.9
    • Added an out of bounds "FUCK" texture.
  • v0.8
  • v0.3
    • Added Cryptic Hideout.

Trivia[]

  • In older versions, most of the wall textures used to be purple, and the main room's ones were a dark pink. The dark pink wall texture can be seen even in newer versions as the main room's design changes after activating the faceless Mario's army, although the player is not supposed to reach that room in this state.
  • In >=v0.9, the "FUCK" texture appears next to the right wall, out of bounds in the hallway leading to the faceless Mario.
  • When the Bob-omb Buddy near the Plexal Upstairs describes someone paler than Mario/Luigi, he's likely referring to the faceless Mario present in the area.

  • In v1.0, the ominous "warning" sound plays when the player speaks to this Bob-omb Buddy. In previous versions, the usual dialogue "beep" played instead.
  • In v0.8, when you activate Faceless Mario jumpscare shows you a bunch of Faceless Mario making a satanic ritual. Trying to do something on that state will crash the game.
  • In v0.7, it was discovered that the old version of Cryptic Hideout from v0.4 is accessible though a warp in Vanilla Lobby behind the doors leading to Vanilla Basement. The way of getting to it is by clipping though the doors in Vanilla Basement using MIPS. The warp has the model of the 1-up assigned.
  • The crash and jumpscare states of the area are referred to as "crashma" and "mario" internally. [1]
