Checkerboard is an area in B3313.
Description[]
The area consists of a plane with a checkerboard texture, surrounded by a black void. From v0.9 onward, the player can run around the area freely, though there is little to see except for a single star.
In earlier versions, multiple warps led to various coordinates in different Checkerboards, with a star placed at each location. The player was warped directly onto the corresponding location's star, meaning it was collected instantly and the player could not move about the area, although other Checkerboard stars could be seen in the distance.
Origins[]
The area may be based on Dudaw's old Beta Revival, or it might be taken from the B-Roll beta version of Super Mario 64.
The music playing is a rendition of the "Banshee Boardwalk" track from Mario Kart 64. Prior to v0.9, there was no music.
Stars[]
This area has 1 star to collect:
- Stand on the plaque in the maze of the Uncanny Courtyard's windy state to be warped to the star in the Checkerboard.
Warps[]
In v0.7, the various Checkerboards had a total of 10 stars to collect, accessed via warps in the following locations:
Course 4 (v0.7)[]
- Sandy Skyloft (area ID 4, warp ID 10)
- Tiny-Huge Island (beta) (area ID 4, warp ID 11)
Course 9[]
- Uncanny Courtyard (area ID 7)
Course 15 (v0.7)[]
- Cool, Cool Mountain (beta) (area ID 3, warp ID 1)
- Flower Fields (area ID 3, warp ID 10)
Wing Cap (v0.7)[]
- Click Clock Climb (area ID 3)
- Lethal Cavern (area ID 3)
- Rocky Trek (area ID 3)
- Tall Floating Fortress (area ID 3)
- Tick Tock Blocks (area ID 3)
All of these warps were found in item boxes at the end of the areas' linear sections, with the exception of the Uncanny Courtyard warp.
Changelog[]
- v0.9
- Removed all Checkerboard areas except Course 9.
- v0.7
- Added additional Checkerboard areas with course IDs for Course 4, Course 15, and Wing Cap.
- v0.5.6
- Added Checkerboard (Course 9).
Trivia[]
- B3313 has several other similar checkerboard-plane areas: Checkerboard (fabricated), Crusher, Beginnings, and Endings.
- In v0.7, the star reached from Uncanny Courtyard shares its star ID with the "Return the Baby Penguin" star in the Course 9 version of Snow Slider (B-Roll). Therefore, collecting one of these stars resulted in the other star appearing as already collected.
