Big Boo's Haunted Forest is an area in B3313.
Description[]
The more common spawn point drops Mario/Luigi into a forest area, surrounded by dead trees and some Boos scattered throughout, and fenced off from three sides as to prevent falling. From here, the player can go straight forward and enter a tower-like structure, with just one room, and a Boo painting, which can be passed through with the usage of the Vanish Cap, available right in front of it. This passage leads to a hallway, ending off in a larger room with a golden Bowser statue. The player can then jump off from the other edge of the room, falling into a hallway which goes into a library room with several bookcases, where Mario/Luigi is blocked by another Boo painting where they can use the Vanish Cap again to pass through the wall.
Now, the player has reach the slide section, which is the less common spawn point. Here, they can either go down the slide in front of them or get another Vanish Cap and go through a third Boo painting, which leads to a new, larger forest area, this time with more enemies such as Goombas and Scuttlebugs. This is also where Big Boo resides.
Origins[]
The area was partially inspired by a now deleted video by The Bob. The slide section is just Princess' Secret Slide from the vanilla game, retextured. The textures originate from a B-Roll clip showcasing a "ghost house" type area. Furthermore, it is also possible that Christopher, the creator of B3313, took inspiration from Luigi's Mansion 64, an early hack of his. The idea of a slide inside a "ghost" area comes from a page listing old beta theories by Awesomelukeyproject.
The music playing in v0.2-v0.7 was an arrangement of "Ghost House" from Super Mario World.
The music playing in Christmas Build-v1.0.2 is "Big Boo's Woods", an original composition by wasteofblood.
Stars[]
This area has 4 stars to collect:
- Collecting all 5 silver stars scattered through the course rewards the player with a star, which spawns in the room before the slide section. Two of these stars require the player enter the stage from Plexal Lobby due to a different start location.
- Go straight from the start and go into a small room.
- Behind a statue of Bowser.
- Between two bookshelves.
- In a corner near the start of the slide.
- Near the start of the slide, grab the vanish cap and go through the boo painting.
- There's a yellow box with a star in it at the bottom of the slide (no time limit required).
- Venturing through the larger forest area and finding, then defeating Big Boo rewards the player with a star.
- From the beginning of the interior, where the first silver star can be found, wall jump up to find a hidden alcove with a power star.
Warps[]
Leading here[]
- Plexal Lobby: In the junction room, go through the double door at the left of the clock, then through the door with the number 1 above it, and into the Boo painting. This lands you in the small forest section.
- Vanilla Lobby: Go through the painting that would normally lead to Princess' Secret Slide. This lands you in the slide section.
- (v0.7) Big Boo's Fortress: Defeat the Big Boo and enter its cage. This lands you in the small forest section.
Dialogue[]
When entering the level:[]
"EH HE HE...
YOU'RE MINE, NOW, HEE HEE!
I'LL PASS RIGHT THROUGH THIS WALL.
CAN YOU DO THAT?
HEH, HEH, HEH!"

Trivia[]
- Upon entering the area for the first time, the player is presented with an unused text from beta SM64 in which Big Boo is taunting Mario/Luigi.
- This area doesn't have enough coins from a 100-coin star, however, considering that Big Boo's Fortress leads directly here, and is also in course 14, the coin counter doesn't change while going through the two areas. In v0.7 and earlier this can be exploited for an easier collection of the aforementioned 100-coin star.
- Since the slide's slope properties are changed, climbing back up the slide is significantly easier than in the vanilla version, being almost entirely walkable through except for a few steeper sections, which can be trivialized via jump-kicking.
- The implied requirement of having to use the Vanish Cap to progress through the area can be skipped by directly jumping down from the smaller forest area and landing in the bigger one. On the other hand, getting all 5 silver stars isn't possible without the Vanish Cap, since the aforementioned shortcut skips a large section of the area that cannot be backtracked.
- Similarly, getting all 5 silver stars isn't possible if the player warps here from the Vanilla Lobby.
- The "Defeat Big Boo" star in Big Boo's Haunted Forest shares the same star ID as the "Hedge Maze Item Box" star in Bowser's Floor. Therefore, collecting the star from one of them is the same as collecting the star from the other and thus you will not get a duplicate star.
- Despite this level having several barriers which require the Vanish Cap, all of the stars in this level can be collected without any caps.
- When entering the area through Plexal Lobby, if you exit and re-enter the course after dying or getting a star, killed enemies and collected silver stars will not respawn. This may be because both Plexal Lobby and Big Boo's Haunted Forest use the same Course internally (Course 14).
